Prof Paul Mativenga

My expertise and research is in Manufacturing Technologies (machining science, micro manufacturing, laser processing and sustainable manufacturing). I obtained a PhD and MSc in Manufacturing Engineering and Advanced Manufacturing Systems and Technology respectively from The University of Liverpool, UK. I am excited about developing engineering science solutions to the major challenges of resource efficiency and industrial sustainability.

Research interests: The history of the British labour movement’s approach to the colonies  and how this impacted on metropolitan thinking and policies. I have carried out research on the British Labour party’s attitude towards the Middle East and in particular to the Palestinian conflict, to decolonization in Africa and, more recently,  to India, in the period leading up to its independence.

I work as part of the Mathematical Modelling in Finance and Economics Group in which we model financial systems with uncertain price and uncertain physical flow, leading to non-linear PDEs which must be solved numerically. I have investigated such systems in the world of mining, working with the international leading mining software company Gemcom, and also within the framework of Revenue Management systems, working with the local business Inventive IT.

There are many situations in a plant’s life when self-destruction of some cells is required. This may happen to create empty spaces inside tissues or when energy needs recycling for new growth or when a scorched earth policy is required to stop the progression of a pathogen. These situations occur during e.g. the germination of seeds, the differentiation of vascular elements, the reproduction and the senescence of plants and under pathogen attack. In all cases, a precise and spatially confined activation of cell death is required and can only been achieved by a complex genetic control.

My research is motivated by interdependencies between human behaviour and mechanisms/institutions designed for environmental protection. I do game theoretic modelling and experimental work.My work includes conservation and management of natural resources, behavioural impact on environmental policies, designing mechanism/institutionfor environmental protection, and environmental regulation. I also look at philosophical and behavioural underpinnings of valuation of environmental goods.
