Dr Roger Shuttleworth

My career started in power systems and power electronics, and involved work on the modelling of power systems, using both dynamic and computer models. I have since worked in textile instrumentation, and on circuit breaker actuators for vacuum switches.

Dr Joseph Mutale

Dr Mutale obtained the BEng degree in Electrical Machines and Power Systems from the University of Zambia. His MSc in Electric Power Transmission and Distribution and PhD in Power System Economics, were obtained from the University of Manchester in 1987 and 2000 respectively. Prior to joining the University of Manchester in 2002 Dr Mutale spent over 15 years in the electric utility industry. His industrial experience includes a wide range of technical posts at ZESCO, the Zambian National Utility, including Director of Engineering Development and Transmission Manager.

Dr John Moriarty

The current focus of our group is the application of probability theory at the interface between mathematical finance and power systems engineering. From 2013 to 2017 I have an EPSRC Early Career Research Fellowship titled Optimal prediction in local electricity markets focusing on the pricing and hedging of risk in electricity demand, for better balancing of future power systems.

The Group focuses on advanced electrical machines and power electronic converters using the latest devices and materials, including superconductors to provide more efficient and effective electrical power conversion and control for transport and renewable energy generation, transmission, and distribution.

Group

National Grid Power Systems Research Centre

The centre has six experimental laboratories; three associated with high voltage engineering, one for dielectric materials, one for protection and control, and one for measurements and instrumentation.

The largest HV lab, the Cockcroft Laboratory, has a floor area of 500m2 and includes a 2MV impulse generator, a 800kV AC cascade resonance test set, a 600kV DC test set, a 300kV AC test set and the latest numerical control, instrumentation and monitoring system.
