Global climate change is resulting in changing weather patterns. For the UK, it is predicted that we will get warmer wetter winters and hotter drier summers. At the same time, there will be an increase in the frequency of extreme weather, including periods of droughts and heat waves, but also more storms and floods. This, combined with growing demand for food across the world, means that agriculture is facing unprecedented challenges. The crops used by farmers will have to change.

Prof Graham Haughton

My research uses political economy perspectives to explore various aspects of urban and regional policy.This has covered work on sustainable urban development, urban regeneration, regional development, water conflicts and labour market governance.

My current writing is focused on two key themes. First, a critical examination of neoliberal spatial governance, in particular theEnglish 'spatial planning project'. Second, I am exploring the political economy of flood risk management, with particular reference to the floods in Hull and the East Riding in 2007.

Prof James Thompson

My current research interests cover all aspects of applied theatre, particularly theatre and performance in war and disaster zones, and then I have related interests in the performative aspects of war and humanitarianism. I have a particular interest in theatre and performance in Sri Lanka and theatre programmes in eastern DR Congo. I have worked in Sri Lanka for UNICEF's Children Affected by Armed Conflict Unit and developed a range of theatre projects for communities affected by the war.

Dr James Rothwell

I am interested in the stores, behaviour, fate and transport of pollutants in the environment. Much of my work addresses the hydrological and biogeochemical processes that affect trace metal and nutrient cycling. I work in a range of systems including peat bogs, forests and urban environments. My research involves, catchment scale process work, laboratory and field experiments, analysis of spatial and temporal monitoring data, and GIS/statistical modelling.

Prof Hugh Coe

The main focus of Hugh's research is on improving the knowledge of the physics and chemistry of atmospheric aerosols. Aerosol particles play key roles in climate change, through reflecting and absorbing solar and infra-red radiation and by acting as sites for the formation of cloud droplets; in air pollution, being linked closely with impacts on human health; and on the transport of pollutants and nutrients on regional or even global scales.
