Society and Environment Research Group

The Society and Environment Research Group (SERG) comprises researchers from the School of Environment and Development and the School of Social Sciences at Manchester University . The SERG is one of the largest groupings of environmental social scientists in the UK and internationally. It contains internationally distinguished researchers and early career scholars who are fast gaining recognition for their work. Group members share a common interest in the causes and consequences of environmental change.

Sustainable Practices Research Group

If there is to be any effective response to climate change, substantially and significantly new ways of living are urgently required. There is growing recognition of the need for fresh ways of framing problems of climate change, consumption and demand, and for forms of intervention capable of catalysing entrenched habits and practices and of doing so quickly and on a big scale.  Understanding and intervening in the dynamics of social practice are central to the challenge of sustainable consumption.

Public and policy discussions are overwhelmingly dominated by economic arguments and the pursuit of technical solutions. But CRESC researchers argue that these foci are too limited. Sustainability is as much about ‘culture’ as it is about technologies or economics. But how to think about this?
