I have a strong interest in conservation biology and field course teaching and I have taught on field courses for over 10 years. Much of my field work is done in the neotropics as part of conservation and development projects. I am a certified Senior Ecologist (ESA) and a Fellow of the Royal Entomological Society.

Dr Mohammad Rahman

I am primarily interested in plant physiology in terms of plants’ responses and interactions with the environment. I am especially keen to work on gas-exchange (photosynthesis, respiration and transpiration) and also resource-use efficiency across environmental gradients.

While doing my PhD I have investigated the effect of urban trees on adapting our cities to the urban heat island by measuring their growth and transpiration across environmental gradients. I have also attempted to carry out comparative ecophysiological studies on simulated changed climatic scenarios.

Dr James Rothwell

I am interested in the stores, behaviour, fate and transport of pollutants in the environment. Much of my work addresses the hydrological and biogeochemical processes that affect trace metal and nutrient cycling. I work in a range of systems including peat bogs, forests and urban environments. My research involves, catchment scale process work, laboratory and field experiments, analysis of spatial and temporal monitoring data, and GIS/statistical modelling.

Green roofs and air pollution.

Urban vegetation is increasingly being recognised as an adaptation method for cities prone to the predicted effects of climate change such as increased temperatures, increased air pollution and a higher incidence of high precipitation events. Space is at a premium in cities, however, so an ideal place to implement urban greening programmes is on rooftops, which can constitute up to 35% of the urban area.
