Centre for Instrumentation and Analytical Science

Instrumentation and Analytical Science carries out research and development of new measurement techniques with funding from UK Research Councils, The European Commission, charities and industry.

This theme brings together a multidisciplinary team that researches new measurement techniques and develops instrumentation to carry out those measurements in areas ranging from molecular processes in living cells to chemical processes in industrial reactors.

Research areas include environmental monitoring.

Centre for the History of Science, Technology and Medicine

Our several interconnected research areas address the social and cultural history of science, technology and medicine as they were practised and experienced. We focuses predominantly on nineteenth- and twentieth-century history, mostly in Britain, Europe and the USA, but also including Far Eastern and African science, technology and medicine.

The Centre for the Genetics of Ecosystem Services

The Centre brings together researchers from within the Faculty of Life Sciences with expertise in ecosystem service measurement and ecological community genetics. This fusion of expertise allows us to answer fundamental questions linking genetic variation and evolutionary processes to the functioning of biotic communities and the delivery of fundamental ecosystem services.

The Centre aims to work collaboratively with other academics, industries and government bodies to address both the fundamental science and the societal impact of ecosystem services.

Centre for Excellence in Enquiry-Based Learning

The Centre for Excellence in Enquiry-Based Learning (CEEBL) was one of 74 Centres for Excellence in Teaching and Learning (CETLs) awarded by HEFCE to promote excellence in teaching and learning in higher education.

The funding expired in June 2010 and this site is now in an archive state.

Centre for Atmospheric Science

The Centre for Atmospheric Science studies processes important to climate change and air quality in the troposphere and lower stratosphere – the lowest 20 km of the Earth’s atmosphere. We are one of the largest such groups in UK universities, and have extensive collaborative links with leading atmospheric sciences groups world-wide.

cities@manchester

The world is primarily an urban place and so scholars, policy makers, and public debate needs to address the urbanity of human experience. Cities are often projected as sources of disorder and social problems, yet cities have always been sources of cultural creativity, transnational connection, diversity, conviviality, and motors of intellectual, economic, environmental and political transformation.

Computational and Evolutionary Biology

We are a department-sized grouping of researchers in Life Sciences who use a wide range of techniques from computational to whole organism experimental approaches in our pursuit of understanding biological systems. A main theme of our research is the use of an evolutionary perspective to inform and predict the behaviour of biological systems.

Brooks World Poverty Institute

We are The Brooks World Poverty Institute, based at The University of Manchester. Our institute brings together one of the world’s largest collections of poverty researchers from across disciplines. We conduct research in the field, to inform solutions to end poverty.

We encourage people to think differently about poverty. Poverty isn’t only about how little money someone has. It’s also about an individual’s access to employment, how included they are in their community and how much they can be heard by the organisations mandated to help them. Poverty occurs in every country.
