Centre for Urban and Regional Ecology

The Centre for Urban Resilience and Energy brings together a diverse group of researchers based in the School of Environment, Education and Development. CURE focuses on the relationships between sustainability transitions in the energy, urban and environment domains. We build on the intellectual strengths and traditions of the Centre for Urban and Regional Ecology, which was active at Manchester between 2000 and 2013.

Dr James Rothwell

I am interested in the stores, behaviour, fate and transport of pollutants in the environment. Much of my work addresses the hydrological and biogeochemical processes that affect trace metal and nutrient cycling. I work in a range of systems including peat bogs, forests and urban environments. My research involves, catchment scale process work, laboratory and field experiments, analysis of spatial and temporal monitoring data, and GIS/statistical modelling.

Dr Angela Connelly

After training as a political scientist, Angela Connelly completed her PhD within the Manchester Architecture Research Centre, which was funded under the AHRC/ESRC 'Religion and Society' Programme. In collaboration with the Methodist Church Property Office and supervised by Professor Michael Hebbert and Dr. Andrew Crompton considered the architectural and social history of Methodism's Central Halls as a hybrid building type of public and sacred space.

Dr Joe Ravetz

Joe Ravetz is a leading thinker on sustainable futures for urban and regional development, and the methods and tools which are needed to help make the transition. His landmark study ‘City-Region 2020 – integrated planning for a sustainable environment’ provides new insights and new pathways, drawing on a major case study of the long-term future of a large conurbation.

Dr Jeremy Carter

Jeremy's research focuses on environmental planning and management. Specific interests include climate change adaptation, spatial planning, water resource management (including flood risk management and the Water Framework Directive) and scenario planning. He has led research projects and published peer reviewed academic papers across these fields.

Dr Andrew Karvonen

University Living Lab Co-Principle Investigator with James Evans

I am a Lecturer in Architecture and Urbanism in the School of Environment, Education and Development at the University of Manchester.

My research bridges the design disciplines and the social sciences with a particular focus on urban sustainability. I also have a decade of experience as an environmental and sustainability consultant and am a licensed engineer in the State of Washington.

Dr Aleksandra Kazmierczak

Aleksandra gained an MSc in Geography from the University of Warsaw, Poland in 2003 and then an MSc in Environmental Resources from the University of Salford in 2005. Her PhD focused on the associations between urban green spaces and social cohesion in Greater Manchester.

Aleksandra is a Research Fellow in the themes of Cities and Climate Change and Green Infrastructure. She represents the University of Manchester in the European Topic Centre on Climate Change Impacts, Vulnerability and Adaptation.

Dr Sarah Lindley

I am a quantitative geographer specialising in the use of geospatial analysis to understand the outcomes of human-environment interactions. My main research interests are associated with urban air pollution and climate adaptation. Much of my research activity is motivated by the need to develop sustainable responses to current and future environmental challenges. I therefore often work in multi-disciplinary teams and in collaboration with stakeholders.
