Jodrell Bank Centre for Astrophysics

The Jodrell Bank Centre for Astrophysics is the astronomical research centre of the University of Manchester and operates MERLIN, the UK's national radio astronomy facility. Jodrell Bank is a world leader in radio astronomy-related research and technology development but also carries out research across the electromagnetic spectrum and in theoretical topics.

The Centre occupies three main locations: the world-famous Jodrell Bank Observatory in Cheshire, and the Alan Turing and Sackville St Buildings in central Manchester.

Dr Tim O'Brien

My research concentrates on the study of exploding stars using telescopes around the world and in space, working across the spectrum from radio waves to X-rays.

I teach undergraduate and postgraduate students and also carry out a wide range of public engagement activities including being the primary media contact for Jodrell Bank. This includes work with the media, schools and events at Jodrell Bank.

Tim is Associate Dean for External Relations in the Faculty of Engineering and Physical Sciences; also Associate Director of Jodrell Bank Observatory.

Dr Bruno Maffei

I have been working for more than 20 years in the field of Far-Infrared Submillimetre Millimetre Astrophysics. This spectral domain covers typical astronomical interests such as study of the Cosmic Microwave Background and its associated foregrounds, high-redshift galaxies, the interstellar medium and star formation.
