Prof Hugh Coe

The main focus of Hugh's research is on improving the knowledge of the physics and chemistry of atmospheric aerosols. Aerosol particles play key roles in climate change, through reflecting and absorbing solar and infra-red radiation and by acting as sites for the formation of cloud droplets; in air pollution, being linked closely with impacts on human health; and on the transport of pollutants and nutrients on regional or even global scales.

Prof Krishna Persaud

Research interests in the area of olfaction from physiology to chemistry. Has been involved in the development of gas sensor arrays for sensing odours based on conducting polymers, that became commercialised by Aromascan plc, now Osmetech plc.

Dr Katharine Smith

Katharine's principal research interests are directed towards the understanding of the basic physical processes involved in electrospray and the development of novel technologies using electrospray, in particular micropropulsion for small satellites. She is also interested in nano satellite technologies.

Dr Ruth Wood

Dr Ruth Wood is a Lecturer in Environment and Climate Change and a Research Fellow with the Tyndall Centre for Climate Change Research. Her research interests include developing and applying emissions and energy accounting methods to different sectors and spatial scales; the development of scenario tools for use in interdisciplinary projects; the relationship between society and infrastructure and its effect on both resource demand and resilience to future climate change impacts.

Prof Andrew Forsyth

Andrew Forsyth graduated with the BSc(Eng) degree in Electrical Engineering from Imperial College, London, in 1981 and he obtained the PhD degree in Power Electronics from the University of Cambridge in 1987. Following industrial experience with GEC Electrical Projects, he has held lecturing positions at the universities of Bath and Birmingham and was appointed to the Chair in Power Electronics at Manchester in 2004 - a post that is co-sponsored by the Royal Academy of Engineering and Rolls-Royce.

Prof Kevin Anderson

Kevin Anderson is Professor of Energy and Climate Change in the School of Mechanical, Aerospace and Civil Engineering at the University of Manchester. He is Deputy Director of the Tyndall Centre for Climate Change Research and is research active with recent publications in Royal Society journals and Nature. He engages widely across all tiers of government; from reporting on aviation-related emissions to the EU Parliament, advising the Prime Minister's office on Carbon Trading and having contributed to the development of the UK's Climate Change Act.

Dr Sarah Mander

Sarah started her career as a Chemical Engineer, initially working as a project engineer in the chemical and pharmaceutical's industry. Upon leaving industry, she spent six years working in a variety of roles for an urban design and build company. For these six years her job included facilitating community engagement in regeneration projects, welding, workshop management and promoting sustainability within urban neighbourhoods. In 1999 she joined Manchester School of Management researching the penetration of wind energy in the North West for her PhD.

Dr Antonio Filippone

Dr. Filippone has been at the University of Manchester since 2000. Before coming to Manchester, he was at the Technical University of Denmark and at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign. Dr Filippone's expertise is on modelling and simulation of fluid flows, software engineering and integration, numerical optimisation, stochastic methods, data analysis.

Dr Joseph Robson

Current work involves the coupling of thermodynamic models, based on Calphad methods, to novel kinetic models, enabling the time and temperature dependence of the microstructure (particularly second phase particles) to be determined for complex industrial alloys and processes. Such an approach is being used to predict microstructure evolution and subsequent effect on properties for a range of aluminium, magnesium, and zirconium alloys during processes such as hot rolling and welding. Applications for these materials include the automotive, aerospace, and nuclear industries.

My expertise and research is in Manufacturing Technologies (machining science, micro manufacturing, laser processing and sustainable manufacturing). I obtained a PhD and MSc in Manufacturing Engineering and Advanced Manufacturing Systems and Technology respectively from The University of Liverpool, UK. I am excited about developing engineering science solutions to the major challenges of resource efficiency and industrial sustainability.
