A network to facilitate interdisciplinary collaboration in water-related research across The University of Manchester and with external research, government and industry organisations.

Water research is a very broad area and, particularly at The University of Manchester, we have expertise and excellence both in (i) research that is immediately relevant and focussed on the water sector per se; and (ii) more specialised research areas (e.g. graphene, control systems, lab-on-a-chip, geological aspects of radioactive waste disposal, environmental sustainability, governance, policy, management) which may have important applications, and not just to water sector.

Prof Jonathan Lloyd

I currently lead a multidisciplinary geomicrobiology group working at the interface between biology and geology. Our research focuses on the mechanisms of microbial metal reduction, with emphasis on the environmental impact and biotechnological applications of metal-reducing bacteria. Current activities are supported by funds from NERC, BBSRC, EPSRC, the EU and industry.

Dr Stephen Boult

Hydrology and hydrochemistry, is studied at all scales from laboratory simulation where conditions are wholly controlled to field scale where, though uncontrolled, conditions are monitored.  This work has been developed through the founding of a University spin out company Intelisys Ltd, which develops commercial monitoring equipment.

Prof Kevin Anderson

Kevin Anderson is Professor of Energy and Climate Change in the School of Mechanical, Aerospace and Civil Engineering at the University of Manchester. He is Deputy Director of the Tyndall Centre for Climate Change Research and is research active with recent publications in Royal Society journals and Nature. He engages widely across all tiers of government; from reporting on aviation-related emissions to the EU Parliament, advising the Prime Minister's office on Carbon Trading and having contributed to the development of the UK's Climate Change Act.

Dr Keith White

I am interested in understanding and managing the water quality and ecology of urban watercourses, including preventing the formation of potentially harmful ‘blooms’ of blue-green algae. Work with an industrial partner is examining the relationship between past and present water quality and the changes in the ecology of Salford Quays – a restored and redeveloped dock system near Media City, Greater Manchester.

Ada Wossink is professor in the Environmental Economics research area group at the University of Manchester. Previous appointments include professor of Agricultural and Resource Economics at North Carolina State University in the USA and positions at Wageningen University in the Netherlands. Prof Peter Stansby

Peter Stansby has been Professor of Hydrodynamics at Manchester University since 1990. 

He obtained his BA in Engineering and his PhD in Aerodynamics at Cambridge University. He then worked for Atkins Research and Development near London on wind and offshore engineering for two years. On moving to Manchester University in 1980, his early research interests were in wave and current loading on offshore structures, specializing in vortex-induced vibrations. Since around 1990 he has worked on coastal hydrodynamics, mainly in relation to shallow-water flows and surf zone waves.

Dr Claire Goulsbra

My broad area of research focuses on the eroding peatland systems of the South Pennines. Of particular interest is the hydrological connectivity of various flow pathways, and how this is affected by the geomorphology and various other characteristics of this unique landscape. My PhD focussed on developing novel ways to monitor the interactions of these flow pathways and the use of innovative technologies remains one of my key interests. More recently, research focuses on carbon losses from eroding peatlands, specifically the fate of particulate carbon from peat deposited on floodplains.

Prof Martin Evans

Martin Evans did graduate work on lake sediment budgets in the alpine zone of British Columbia before returning to the UK to work on upland peatlands, first at Durham and then in the Upland Environments group at Manchester. He has research interests in the geomorphology and hydrology of upland landscapes. Currently the major focus is on upland peatland systems, working on processes of peatland erosion and restoration and their impacts on water and carbon fluxes.

Prof Katherine Morris

My current research focuses on the environmental behaviour of radioactive contaminants. Development of nuclear weapons and nuclear power has left a legacy of radioactively contaminated land and radioactive wastes that will be disposed of in a deep geological disposal facility. Understanding the behaviour of radioactive contaminants in these environments is essential in managing our radioactive legacy.

Dr Nicholas Bryan

The main research area of my group is Environmental Chemistry, and in particular, the interaction of radionuclides with natural systems. Current projects involve the study of the interaction of these elements with natural colloids, including humic substances. Colloids have a high affinity for many pollutants, and can act as a vector for their migration in the environment. Lab experiments are used to study sorption and desorption mechanisms, and are backed up by work involving real samples from the field.

Dr James Rothwell

I am interested in the stores, behaviour, fate and transport of pollutants in the environment. Much of my work addresses the hydrological and biogeochemical processes that affect trace metal and nutrient cycling. I work in a range of systems including peat bogs, forests and urban environments. My research involves, catchment scale process work, laboratory and field experiments, analysis of spatial and temporal monitoring data, and GIS/statistical modelling.

Dr Bart Van dongen

Dr Bart van Dongen studied Chemistry at the University of Leiden (The Netherlands). He completed his PhD at the Royal Netherland Institute for Sea research (NIOZ)/ University of Utrecht on the natural sulfurisation of carbohydrates in marine sediments and the consequences for the chemical and carbon isotopic composition of sedimentary organic matter in 2003.

Prof Hugh Coe

The main focus of Hugh's research is on improving the knowledge of the physics and chemistry of atmospheric aerosols. Aerosol particles play key roles in climate change, through reflecting and absorbing solar and infra-red radiation and by acting as sites for the formation of cloud droplets; in air pollution, being linked closely with impacts on human health; and on the transport of pollutants and nutrients on regional or even global scales.

My research interests in tectonic geomorphology are based around landscape response to climate change and tectonic processes. This includes:

Dr Ruth Wood

Dr Ruth Wood is a Lecturer in Environment and Climate Change and a Research Fellow with the Tyndall Centre for Climate Change Research. Her research interests include developing and applying emissions and energy accounting methods to different sectors and spatial scales; the development of scenario tools for use in interdisciplinary projects; the relationship between society and infrastructure and its effect on both resource demand and resilience to future climate change impacts.

Dr Alastair Martin

Alastair teaches subjects relating to the environment and sustainable technology to both undergraduate and postgraduate students including water and waste water treatment technology and waste management and valorisation. 

His research covers a range of subjects within process engineering relevant to the management of environmental impact including non-Newtonian rheology of suspensions, modelling of bio-reactors and reactor networks.

Prof Clive Agnew

I am an applied climatologist and hydro-meteorologist working on problems of environmental degradation and environmental status assessment. I have worked extensively in both the drylands and the wetlands of Africa, Europe and the Middle East, developing strategies for the improved management of water shortages at local and regionallevels. I am currently engaged in studies of wetland hydrology in the UK with an emphasis up boundary layer fluxes and assessing the spatial variability of climate change predictions.

Pure and applied mineralogy, geochemistry and metallogenesis. This work has ranged from experimental investigations to field studies. The mineralogical investigations have focussed on the chalcogenides (esp. sulfides) and magnetic oxides, using experimental synthesis combined with spectroscopic analysis, including synchrotron XAS and diffractiontechniques.

Dr Patricia Thornley

Patricia Thornley is a chartered physicist with over 20 years experience working in bioenergy in industry and academia. She was involved with engineering implementation of many of the UKs early bioenergy plants, but is now based at the Tyndall Centre for Climate Change Research at the University of Manchester. Patricia leads the 4.5 million EPSRC SUPERGEN Bioenergy Hub, which aims to bring together industry, academia and other stakeholders to focus on the research challenges associated with delivering sustainable bioenergy systems.

Dr Alison Browne

Alison has a number of active and interdisciplinary research projects on everyday practice and sustainable consumption; dirt, cleanliness and freshness; and the governance of water resources, drought, and climate change adaptation. In previous research projects she explored the governance of large scale resource development (e.g., agriculture, NRM, water infrastructure, mining) using 'environmentality', 'risk' and 'mega-project paradox' frameworks.
