STEP-CHANGE

There is an accepted need to promote step changes towards more sustainable urban environments, notably in transport and travel, which we will focus on. Project will provide an empirically grounded frame for the modelling of transformational futures.

The world is primarily an urban place and so scholars, policy makers, and public debate needs to address the urbanity of human experience. Cities are often projected as sources of disorder and social problems, yet cities have always been sources of cultural creativity, transnational connection, diversity, conviviality, and motors of intellectual, economic, environmental and political transformation.

Sustainability is cultural too

How can we move towards sustainability?

Public and policy discussions are overwhelmingly dominated by economic arguments and the pursuit of technical solutions. But CRESC researchers argue that these foci are too limited. Sustainability is as much about ‘culture’ as it is about technologies or economics. But how to think about this?
