Whitworth Art Gallery

The Whitworth Art Gallery re-opens on February 14th, 2015!

A £15 million development has transformed the gallery, doubling it in size and creating new spaces that embrace the park it calls home.Yet although the Whitworth is about to open a new chapter in its history, the organisation itself has a much broader story to tell.

Environmental Champions Group Blog

All staff and volunteers encouraged to contribute. Green Roof, Learning team, Gallery Beekeeper. Plasma screens and lighting replaced by eco-friendly alternatives.


Global Action Plan

In place since 2008. Currently in the process of drawing up one cohesive document that draws several different aims and schemes together. Targeting BREEAM excellent status. Silver Award in Green Impact Workbook. Targeting the Advanced Level in 2013.


Community and external engagement

Planning is informed by University's sustainability plan, and external bodies: SU's Green Impact Workbook, MCC's Environmental Business Pledge (managed by Groundwork), Renaissance in the Regions, Heritage Lottery Fund, Arts Council England.


Green Travel Plan

Currently in development. Collaboration with Manchester Museum. Initiatives such as encouraging staff to use public transport and interest-free loans for annual bus and train passes. No domestic flights; international travel however is essential.
